On Thursday, disability and senior rights advocates rallied at the Capitol Rotunda to protest cuts to the human services sector.
The House Budget Committee cut close to $130 million from the Governor’s health and human services budget last week.
Senator David Wazenried (D-Missoula) said the cuts are costly for Montanans with disabilities and seniors who rely on the services.
“When I got up this morning, I was able to take a shower by myself, dress myself, and I was able to brush my teeth. Not all Montanans can do that. We desperately need to make sure the services are provided in your communities for our more vulnerable and our frailer neighbors,” Wazenried said.
But Republican leaders argued the state doesn’t have the money, and future generations will have to pay for this generation’s fiscal irresponsibility.
The bill that sets the state budget will go before the House within the next few days.
